Why can't Microsoft count to 10?

Yeah, they promised the kernal that was in XP for what became 95, but did not deliver.

And NT took over the file handling of... VMS? V something. But they didn't bring it to non-corporate customers until it was about twelve years late.

I was pretty pissed at 95, looking under the hood it was a horrible, horrible kludge. And even XP was saddled with the terrible idea of the registry that they created for windows 95.

IIRC, Capcom counts like this:

There's also Super 2 (before Super 2 Turbo), and Alpha is known as Zero in some countries. So it's 1, 2, 0, 3, 4 if you don't include stuff like X-Men vs Street Fighter, Super SF 2 Turbo and EX Plus.

I haven't used Vista or Win7 enough to know... did they ever get rid of the registry in any of those?

The registry is one of a number of solutions for ugly problems. Like 'how does the OS know what to do with files you double click on' that actually have no good solutions. Vista and 7 still use one, but it's a very different beast from WinXP's version.

Yeah, the Registry is just used badly by most programs. Raymond Chen has given a number of reasons for the switch to using the Windows Registry. This basically reads as a summary of the advantages of the Windows Registry.
